WHAT IS IVF?
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the most effective technique available to help people with fertility problems have a baby.
As part of IVF, medication is required to help eggs to mature. After this carefully monitored period of ovulation-inducing medication, the eggs are transvaginally harvested and then injected with sperm. The next day fertilization is seen and the further development is monitored in the Lab. On the fifth day the embryos are either transferred fresh, frozen, or biopsied and frozen. Most clinics freeze all the embryos. At Fertility Partnership we will perform “fresh transfers” if all the stars align.
WHAT ARE YOU PAYING FOR WITH IVF?
On average, an IVF cycle will cost anywhere from $12,000 to $17,000 in the United States – but this isn’t all in. This price doesn’t include the necessary medication. When we look at the price, including the medication, we’re nearing much closer to an average of $25,000 per cycle.
Plus – some clinics charge extra for visits with your doctor, or diagnostic tests like semen analysis, prior to the fertilization. There are legitimate extra fees like for biopsying the embryos and freezing them. Sometimes there are lab fees if your health insurance does not cover them.
That’s an eye watering price for most of us – especially with the knowledge that the first cycle is not always successful, not to mention the cost of a child in life after IVF. But achieving your dreams of growing your family doesn’t need to bankrupt you.
