What Is IVF?

In Vitro Fertilization is a comprehensive and sophisticated assisted reproductive technology (ART). It involves extracting eggs, retrieving a sperm sample, and then manually combining an egg and sperm in a laboratory dish. The embryo(s) is then transferred to the uterus. IVF can be performed using your own eggs and your partner’s sperm or with donated eggs, sperm, or embryos.

Who Might IVF Be Right For?

IVF is often considered when other treatments have not been successful or if there is a need to overcome specific fertility obstacles, such as:

  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
  • Male factor infertility including decreased sperm count or sperm motility
  • Women with ovulation disorders, premature ovarian failure, or uterine fibroids
  • Individuals with a genetic disorder
  • Unexplained infertility

How Is IVF Performed?

Step 1: Ovary Stimulation: Multiple eggs are encouraged to grow, instead of the single egg that normally develops each month. Multiple eggs are needed because some eggs will not fertilize or develop after fertilization.

Step 2: Egg Retrieval: A minor surgery, called follicular aspiration, is conducted to remove eggs from the woman’s ovaries.

Step 3: Fertilization: The retrieved eggs are fertilized in a lab using collected sperm.

Step 4: Embryo Culture: Once the eggs are fertilized, they’re monitored to ensure healthy development.

Step 5: Embryo Transfer: Embryos are transferred into the woman’s uterus three to five days following egg retrieval and fertilization.

What Should I Expect During and After IVF

The IVF cycle involves several steps that take place over a few weeks. Discomfort may be experienced due to ovary stimulation. After transferring the embryo(s), you can resume normal activities with caution.

Pregnancy tests are typically taken two weeks after embryo transfer. The period following the test can be emotional, and support from friends, family, or a counselor can be beneficial.
